A short film, with pictures of Suffolk, Thames barges sailing near the Isle of Sheppey, and vintage cars gathering for a parade in Petts Wood, including my father’s 1926 Vauxhall.

This set starts with a race on Pomme d’Or, owned by a crew mate of Dad’s, boat maintenance at Brightlingsea, then back aboard Ally Sloper for a trip up the River Orwell. I was apparently at Brightlingsea, but I don’t remember it now. Great detail, and sense of ‘60s fun messing about in boats. June…

This film records quite a voyage. The 1962 North Sea Race (Harwich to Berghaven) looks as though they were virtually becalmed, on the first day, and the visit to Dunkerque… some stunning pictures and the crew evidently enjoyed themselves!

March 1962 was the date the film was developed, but the photos cover several months before… The last two photos, in London, took a bit of sleuthing; the buildings gave me the clues I needed to locate them. After the balmy-looking weather in Oostende, the rest show a chilly 1961/2 winter.

A month or less after the last film, and Dad probably went to Winchelsea, Sussex by car, because the next two photos are at home in Orpington, Kent, and after that, a family holiday in Cornwall. I remember that holiday; I think it was when my little brother (aged 3) fell off a gate and…

This was quite a thrilling sail, by the looks of it, especially after Calais and down the Channel to Brixham in Devon. Mum was aboard with Dad, and we kids apparently met them in Brixham, and I went out on Ally Sloper myself. I don’t remember it, but the camera doesn’t lie…

This was a fascinating series of photos to research. While some are not the best quality, they record what must have been an amazing trip, starting in Kent and following the River Seine to and through Rouen. Some great shots of 1960s France.

The first of my father’s films to post is the earliest I have so far, dated March 1961. He records a day that we (the family) went to Dover to see him off on a Dover-Calais yacht race, and the race itself.
